Precision Spooling and Packaging Built Around Your Process

At MWS Wire, our spooling and packaging goals are simple: you receive the wire you ordered - spooled and packaged exactly the way you need it. From the spool style and dimensions, to winding pattern, lead treatment, and packaging method, every order can be tailored to your downstream manufacturing process, payoff equipment, testing requirements, and final termination needs.

Whether you are maintaining legacy equipment, matching existing tooling, or specifying a new production setup, MWS works to provide a spool that fits your machines and supports reliable, efficient wire handling. Our broad range of spool sizes, materials, and winding capabilities means there is a solution for applications ranging from fine wire measured in grams to heavy square and rectangular wire packages weighing hundreds of pounds.

MWS precision spooling helps ensure wire pays off smoothly. Wire is wound with controlled tension, pitch, and consistency to reduce handling problems during downstream processing. This is especially important when your machinery requires a particular spool profile, arbor hole size, traverse width, winding style, or lead configuration.

VAS Wire is Assembly-Ready

Spooling and packaging are part of MWS Wire's Value Added Services - a suite of processes and technical capabilities that support your wire needs from development through production. Whether it's custom spooling, ablation, discreet lengths, or lab reports, MWS can prepare your wire to be assembly-ready for your downstream processes.

Spool Types

MWS offers a broad selection of spool and reel formats so customers can select a package that fits their equipment and production requirements. Available configurations include the following.

Spool typeTypical application benefit
Tapered spoolsA tapered barrel can support high-speed dereeling and is available in multiple package sizes, including nominal net capacities from 50 to 90 pounds depending on the wire alloy and configuration.
Straight spoolsStraight-barrel spools provide a traditional, versatile format and are available in numerous diameters, traverse lengths, arbor-hole sizes, and capacity ranges.
Taper flange spoolsTaper flange configurations offer compact package options for applications requiring specific flange, barrel, and traverse dimensions.
Metal spools for batch annealingMetal spool options can be used when the wire package must be compatible with batch annealing operations.
Bi-conical taper spoolsBi-conical flange designs are available for applications that require a spool profile suited to the customer’s payoff equipment.
Steeger spoolsMWS stocks Steeger spools to support customers using that established spool format and related equipment.
Custom or customer-provided spoolsMWS can wind wire onto custom spools or customer-provided spools when a standard format does not fit existing machinery or tooling. Wire can also be cut to length and packaged in tubes or boxes, depending on the wire diameter, and length of the wire pieces. See Discrete lengths

Spool & Reel Specifications

MWS's standard spool-specifications include tapered, taper flange, and straight spool designs in a variety of flange diameters, barrel diameters, traverse lengths, overall lengths, and arbor-hole sizes. This range allows customers to match a package to the physical requirements of their equipment rather than compromise with a one-size-fits-all spool.

Length and straightness are controlled to your specific requirements, supporting consistent results across production runs.

Spool Winding Methodologies

The way wire is wound can have a direct effect on payoff performance, production speed, and the compatibility of a wound spool, or package, with your equipment. MWS offers special winding options to help match the package to your process.

  • Crosshatch winding creates a controlled crisscross winding pattern that can support stable wire placement and consistent payout.
  • Layer winding places wire in uniform layers for an orderly package and precise control of the wound wire.
  • Precision winding uses controlled tension and pitch to create evenly wound spools designed for dependable dereeling and payoff.
  • Shaped wire winding is available for square and rectangular wire, including sizes as small as 18 AWG.
  • Specialized bobbin winding is available for precision medical cable applications, including wire placed on braider bobbins.

Your winding method can be selected based on the wire's size, shape, material, coating, required package weight, and the way it will be processed on your line. Instead of adapting your machinery to a standard package, MWS can help configure the package around the way you manufacture.

Start and Finish Lead Treatment

The start and finish leads on a wire spool can be prepared to support your testing, setup, and termination procedures. MWS can provide lead configurations that make it easier to access the wire when the spool arrives at your facility.

  • Both ends exposed: MWS can leave the start lead and finish lead exposed on the spool, providing access to either end as required to support electrical testing, production setup, and final termination.
  • Process-specific lead placement: Lead treatment can be coordinated with the selected spool, winding direction, and intended payoff method so the package works with your existing workflow.

This flexibility can be particularly valuable for operations using legacy systems or established tooling. Rather than requiring changes to fixtures, test stations, or termination processes, MWS can help deliver a spool configuration that fits your equipment the way that you use it.

Packaging and Shipping

Accurate Orders in Perfect Condition

MWS Industries packages your products for delivery in a manner that ensures you receive your products in perfect condition. Every spool we ship has custom labels with information specified by our customers. When buying from MWS, you have the option to set up scheduled releases on your terms or to place an order for next-day shipping off the shelf.  We have processes in place to double check all orders before they leave, and both the shipper and our checkers verify every order before it leaves MWS.

Boxes and Cartons

MWS Industries packages your products so they arrive safely and undamaged. MWS typically packages material using the "box inside a box" method. All of our premium interior boxes are made from recycled material and our interior "loose fill" packaging is made from a water-soluble starch. MWS reuses all the packaging material we can, for customer shipments or for our own in-house inventory packing. Learn more about our commitment to sustainability.

Large Pallet Shipments

MWS Wire Industries can handle your larger weight shipments as well. From as little as 100 lbs. up to 2,000 lbs. per pallet, we can securely palletize your order for delivery anywhere in the world. We use only the best quality pallets (standard or treated wood and plastic) to ensure a safe and undamaged shipment arrives at your facility.
