Packaging Information

Since its founding in 1968, MWS Wire has sought to expand resource conservation, recycling and reuse. In the formative years these efforts included recycling and reuse of spools and packaging, a process that has since been improved and enhanced with current goals to make this business process even more effective in the future. In recent years major projects included installation of high efficiency pollution control equipment, investment in a 155 kW photovoltaic electrical generation plant and replacement of facility lighting with energy efficient lamps, ballasts and sensors.

Environmental Policy

MWS Wire Industries is committed to the highest level of environmental stewardship in our industry through processes that prevent pollution, comply with relevant legislation and regulations; and continuous improvement achieved by meeting challenging environmental objectives and performance targets.

  • Purchased shipping cartons contain up to 30% recycled material.
  • All paper, cardboard, plastic and metallic waste is reused or recycled.
  • Loose fill packaging material used in the shipping department is non-toxic, biodegradable and readily dissolves in water.
  • Wire spools and reels are reused by MWS or returned to our suppliers for reuse. Our customers are encouraged to join this conservation effort.

  • In May 2012 MWS celebrated five years of clean electrical power produced by a 155 kW photovoltaic solar generating system designed and installed by Sun Integration of Tarzana, California.

  • Through November 2014 more than 2000 MW-hours of clean power have been generated while avoiding over 700 tons of GHG emissions that would have been produced by the electric utility.
  • In 2008 lighting throughout the facility was replaced with energy efficient lamps and ballasts. Occupancy sensors further enhanced savings to over 30,000 kW-hours annually.
  • MWS Wire is an EPA Green Power Partner in recognition of its conservation and clean power generation.

  • MWS Wire Industries was named a winner in the 2004 Waste Reduction Awards Program (WRAP) sponsored by the California Integrated Waste Management Board – the state's leading authority on recycling and waste reduction.

  • MWS waste management programs recycle more than double the volume disposed as trash and realize significant annual cost savings from recycling and reuse.

  • Using the EPA Climate Leaders Guide to Greenhouse Gas Management for Small Business & Low Emitters, 2012 GHG emissions were 104 metric tons, taking into account stationary combustion, HVAC operation, electricity consumption and mobile sources.
  • MWS has established 2012 as a baseline year for gauging future efforts to limit emission of greenhouse gases from business activities.

1 - Spool return and reuse: publicize, promote and track effectiveness of a plan to encourage customers to return wire spools and reels for reuse.
    2015 UPDATE –
MWS identified the steams of spools and reels used internally. Processes were enacted to ensure no internally used spools or reels end up in landfills. Tens of thousands of pounds of packaging was returned, reused, or recycled. Additionally, MWS has a growing list of environmentally conscious customers who return packaging for reuse..
    2014 UPDATE –
Through personal and written communication to our customers MWS continues to promote returning spools to be reused /recycled. As a result, approximately 20,000 lbs. of spools, reels and packaging were recycled or reused in 2014.
2 - Work with selected customers to develop multiple use shipping containers to replace single use boxes.
    2015 UPDATE -
2014 UPDATE - Pilot project initiated in 2013 resulted in packaging design and production cost quotation, but customer operations moved to Central America, making freight costs for packaging return unfeasible. MWS continues to seek a willing partner to launch this cost saving project.
3 - Internally track effort to reduce carbon emissions in proportion to emissions per employee, with 2012 as the baseline year. The baseline in 2012 was 2.2 metric tons per employee which increased to 2.3 metric tons in 2013
    2015 UPDATE - 2.5 metric tons/employee
    2014: 2.3 metric tons/employee
    2015: 2.5 metric tons/employee
4 - Identify additional processes to reduce paper consumption
2015 UPDATE - MWS changed two internal processes to eliminate paperwork. This came on the heels of a major paperwork reduction over 2013-14.
